Silver

Pure silver is soft and malleable, which makes it prone to damage. Still, it is sometimes used in certain handcrafted items that feature weaving or other intricate designs. Like gold, silver used in the making of jewelry and other accessories, benefits from additions (mostly copper) that create more durable alloys.

All silver jewelry offered by OroSpot is made of sterling silver. Our collection features original custom designed items not available anywhere else.

Our guide will help you identify quality in silver jewelry and accessories.

Sterling Silver

Also called standard silver, this most popular and durable silver alloy is used for quality jewelry and household accessories, such as silverware. It is composed of more than 90% pure silver mixed with copper, which greatly improves hardness while maintaining the color and the overall value of silver items. The price of sterling silver items is determined by the quality of craftsmanship and design.

Over a period of time, silver tends to develop a dark build-up, called tarnish. Tarnishing is a natural process caused by the exposure to hydrogen sulfide present in the environment. For tips on how to slow down and remove tarnishing, see the Care and Maintenance section below.

Quality assurance

High-end silver jewelry items are stamped with the quality or fineness mark that designates the precious metal content. Federal regulations also require a maker’s mark or a registered trademark, to ensure quality.

Care and maintenance

  • Wearing your silver jewelry often is the best way to prevent tarnish build-up.
  • Clean your silver using specially formulated polishes, solutions, or cloths available at hardware, craft and jewelry stores to further slow down and remove tarnish.
  • Store silver jewelry in a cloth pouch or in a separate compartment of your jewelry box
  • Avoid exposing silver to chlorinated water and to cleaning products that contain bleach or ammonia.
